Governor Baldacci issues proclamation naming July 19, 2006, Pine Tree Society Day in recognition of organization’s 70th anniversary

Bath, Maine -- Governor John Baldacci has issued a proclamation naming July 19, 2006, Pine Tree Society Day in recognition of the organization’s 70th anniversary.

”It’s an honor for Pine Tree Society to be recognized with a proclamation from Governor Baldacci,” said Anne Marsh, Executive Director of the organization.  “Pine Tree Society is able to reach out to more people in new and different ways, providing innovative services that could not even have been imagined back in 1936.  I so greatly appreciate this recognition of Pine Tree Society’s work to make a difference in the lives of Maine children and adults with disabilities.”

Pine Tree Society was also recognized with a special Legislative Sentiment introduced by Rep. Thomas Watson of Bath. 

Pine Tree Society was established in 1936 as a small statewide organization tasked with helping children with disabilities live and play like "other children”.  The organization was a leader in providing essential services to Maine children afflicted with polio through its programs at the Hyde Memorial Home located in Bath. 

In 1945, the Society established Pine Tree Camp and began offering a traditional summer camp experience to Maine children with physical disabilities.  All who could benefit from the extraordinary programming at the camp on North Pond in Rome were accepted, regardless of their family’s ability to pay tuition.  Throughout its history, Pine Tree Society has been committed to meeting unmet needs of Maine people with disabilities through innovative programs and services. 

Today, Pine Tree Society offers comprehensive and professional services designed to help Maine people with disabilities lead active, more socially connected lives.  The Society shares a spirit of innovation and desire to discover new ways to break down barriers that many find insurmountable.
