Camp Communicate

Workshops

Camp Communicates workshops are designed to provide parents and providers learning opportunities in the areas of Augmentative Communication (AAC) and Assistive Technology (AT). Participants may select any or all workshops. When not in workshops, parents and/or providers will participate in camp activities with the camper, learning from naturally occurring experiences and applying new knowledge in these contexts.

1) Roundtable Discussion (parents only)

Facilitated by Maine Parent Federation

Come and share your experiences with other parents of children using AAC.  Listen to ideas and resource options for you.  Describe what has worked for you and what hasn’t.  Network with folks that may become part of your support circle in the future.

2) Resources for Funding AT

Presented by staff from MaineCITE

Funding AT can often be an uphill climb.  During this workshop, MaineCITE will provide a variety of options for funding AT when the typical avenues might not be available.  The presenter will have resources from all states represented at Camp Communicate.

3) A workshop will also be provided by staff from Dynavox Technologies, the topic of which will be determined and sent along at a later date.

4) Assistive Technology For Learning-An Overview

Presented by Communication Pathways at Pine Tree Society

Your child uses technology to communicate.  Do they also use it in their learning environments?  Communication Pathways staff will discuss a variety of low, mid and high tech tools for learning that may support your child in accessing curriculum material.  Supports for reading, writing and other curriculum areas will be covered in this one-hour workshop.

5) Working Toward Communication Independence

Presented by Shawn Malcomson of Prentke Romich

Vocabulary selection, modeling, and practice are three key elements in the successful use of an AAC system, each of these lead to an increase in communicative skill and competence by the user.  Opportunities for practice are plentiful and can help guide us in our selection of vocabulary.  During this session we will discuss vocabulary selection that is both age and developmentally appropriate, and how to match the two when there is a gap.  We will also talk about modeling strategies such as how to model, what to model, and when to do it!
