Bath, Maine -- Newport will be buzzing with activity the weekend of Feb. 6 and 7 as it hosts the annual Snowmobile Ride-in to benefit Pine Tree Camp. Snowmobilers from all corners of the state are expected to make their way to Newport all in support of Pine Tree Camp.
According to Harvey Chesley, coordinator of the Ride-in, the event attracts community members from all over the greater Newport area.
"With community activities like the Friday night auction, our public meals and the pageant, we’ve really seen tremendous support from people living in the Newport area,” he said. “We can’t thank them enough.”
This year, snowmobilers and community members alike will have even more to keep them busy.
On Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. horse-drawn wagons will take participants on rides throughout downtown Newport. Activities such as sand art, balloon games and a pie-eating contest will make the Sebasticook Valley Community Center the place to be for children from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
The new activities join an already busy weekend that includes an auction Friday night beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Sebasticook Valley Community Center, the annual Q106.5 Egg Ride on Saturday morning, the annual Queen and Princess pageant starting at 1 p.m. at the SVCC and a delicious public supper starting at 4:30 p.m. at the SVCC. A full schedule of events is available at www.pinetreesociety.org.
Since 1974, the Snowmobile Ride-in has raised more than $3.4 million in support of Pine Tree Camp. All proceeds from the weekend will benefit Pine Tree Camp, an extraordinary summer camp for Maine children and adults with disabilities, is one of the many programs of Pine Tree Society.
The Snowmobile Ride-in is made possible with support from Dead River Company, J.D. Irving and Sappi.
Pine Tree Camp in Rome opened in 1945 as a recreational and therapy outlet for Maine children with disabilities. A stay at the 280-acre facility in the Belgrade Lakes region allows campers to participate in such activities as arts and crafts, swimming, boating, fishing and overnight camping.
Pine Tree Camp is one of the many programs of Pine Tree Society. For more than 70 years, Pine Tree Society has been providing Maine children and adults with disabilities the opportunities and the means to create better lives for themselves and their families.
