Augusta, Maine -- Pine Tree Society kicked off Autism Awareness month by hosting a Tea at the Blaine House. The more than 70 people in attendance represented organizations and state entities, as well as parents, family members and caregivers.

Anne Marsh, Pine Tree Society's Executive Director welcomed guests and shared information about the dramatic increase of autism spectrum disorder rates in Maine.

"During the past year, it was reported that 1 in 77 children in Maine have an autism spectrum disorder," said Marsh. "This ranks Maine second in the prevalence of autism across the country."

Marsh also stressed the importance of organizations partnering to meet the increased needs.

"The prevalence rate of autism spectrum disorders demands that we as a community work together to meet the growing needs of children and adults with autism and their families," she said. "Today is an opportunity to begin a conversation about how we, together, can take on this challenge.  One organization or entity alone will not be able to meet the needs.  This is an opportunity for partnerships and collaborations."
