Pine Tree Camp: It’s the place where I fit

It has been a long spring in Maine, but at Pine Tree Society we are always thinking about summer.  No matter the month or the stormy weather, summer is always on our minds. Why?  Because summer means Pine Tree Camp.  Our campers, nearly 650 Maine children and adults with disabilities, are always thinking about summer too.  And it’s no wonder.

“I can’t wait for that feeling again. Pine Tree Camp is the only place I feel no barriers.”

This statement by a young camper says it all.  It is easy to take for granted the ability to explore the beauty of the woods, cool off on a hot day in the waters of a lake or go on a tenting adventure with the sound of peepers lulling you to sleep.  For our campers, Pine Tree Camp is the only place they can participate in these simple joys of life.  Campers immerse in the beauty of Maine- and participate in the activities for which our beautiful state is famous.

“It’s the place where I fit. It’s where my friends are. It’s where I know I’m not different.”

Campers face a lot of challenges in their everyday lives, but as soon as they  turn down the dirt road leading to Pine Tree Camp, they  enter a world where they are one in the crowd — not “the one with a disability.”  This even playing field results in strong bonds. They make friends for the first time.  These friendships sustain them throughout the year.

“Madyson was included in everything and our whole family felt ‘normal’ for six days.”

Families benefit, enjoying a respite from the demands of caring for a loved one with a disability.  This is likely the only break they receive all year long.  They can relax knowing that their loved one is safe, well cared for and having fun.

We are so proud of our Open Door Policy that has been firmly in place since Pine Tree Camp opened its gates in 1945.  This incredible promise that we make to our campers and their families is only possible thanks to the support of you, our generous donor.  Pine Tree Camp receives no state or federal funding. Together, we ensure that no camper is ever turned away because they cannot afford tuition.  In fact, 99% of our campers receive full or partial tuition assistance.

Your support will transform lives.  Thank you in advance for your gift to Pine Tree Camp.
